A 1914 Star to Military Medal winner 10491 Private Patrick Gillon of the Scottish Rifles, (with copy clasp) Private Patrick Gillon entered France with the 2nd Battalion Scottish Rifles (Cameronians) on 5 November 1914. He was to be awarded the Military Medal on 9 November 1916 presumably for action during the Battle of the Somme when the battalion saw heavy fighting, particularly in October 1916. Patrick died of wounds on 30 July 1917 and is buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery in Belgium. Although Soldiers Died in the Great War states that Patrick was born and enlisted in Barony, Glasgow the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database states that he was the “adopted son of Emma M. Pullin, of Ardleigh Court Cottage, Ardleigh, Colchester.”
